The Legend of Zelda

12 Mar

I’ve been playing a lot of the original Zelda on the Wii lately – finishing this game has been my unicorn/holy grail/tuna sandwich for most of my video gaming life. In fairness too my anemic fingers I never owned it until it was released on the virtual console and I don’t think it’s a game you can finish in an hour when you’re 11 while your fat friend with Asthma breaths like Darth Vader and pokes you with a stick (not a euphemism).

Anyway just as Fredric Wertham (or who ever the hell thought video games were the devil) feared, Nintendo have imprinted their world views on my mind (yes Nintendo’s political views support a form of anarchy where the world is reduced back to the feudal system with a jewel based economy and we run around fighting with wooded swords).

Last night when I sat down to put together a new strip all I managed to do was create a Dumpster Bunnies version of Link. Since it was Zelda 1 influenced he has brown hair because at some point Link started using peroxide, probably after watching Fast Times at Ridgemont High because Link = major Spicoli fan. Not sure what I’ll use this character for yet but I’m sure you’ll find out.

To cap off this delightful transcription of useless knowledge I dug up the first episode of the 1989 short lived Zelda cartoon that aired with The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!. In it see more of Link with his original brown hair and a homo-erotic fight scene between a couple of moblins and Link in a night gown. Also take note of how Link is a total Douche and his sword shoots lazer beams. Possibly the only redeeming quality of the show is that they were too cheap to hire a composer and instead just used the games’ music and sound effects.
